Nguyen Dinh Huy Vietnam
A journalist and political activist,
he was arrested on 17 November 1993 and later sentenced to 15 years in
jail. He has edited several publications, including the daily Cap Tien
(Progress), before the communists took control of the country. He was earlier
arrested in 1975 after the fall of Saigon and sent to a re-education camp,
from which he was released in 1982. From1990, he led the Movement for the
Unity of the People and the Construction of Democracy, which fights for
a free press in Vietnam.
He was arrested after asking permission
to hold a conference on democracy in Ho Chi Minh City. On 20 February 1995,
he was sentenced to 15 years in jail for “plotting against the socialist
state.” In December that year, the sentence was confirmed on appeal and
he was jailed in Ham Tan prison camp, in Dong Nai province. He is nearly
70 and has four children.
Dear Ambassador,
May I draw your attention to the
case of the journalist Nguyen Dinh Huy, who was arrested on 17 November
1993 ? To the best of my knowledge, he was simply exercising his right
to freedom of expression, guaranteed by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. I therefore call on you to take steps to ensure he is
released.

Nguyen Xuan Tu Vietnam
This journalist, who is a biologist,
dissident and columnist on the banned literary magazine Langbian, was arrested
on 12 February 2001 for the second time and sentenced to two years’ house
arrest.
The official daily newspaper of
the Vietnamese police, Cong An Nhan Dan, said Nguyen Xuan Tu (whose pen
name is Ha Sy Phu) was accused of “having contacts with reactionary forces
abroad with the intention of harming the Vietnamese nation and overthrowing
the socialist regime and the Vietnamese communist party .”
The journalist, in his early 60s,
was put under house arrest without any trial. He cannot receive visits
and his phone is tapped and regularly cut off.
Publication of articles and writings
in Langbian critical of the regime, as well as two of his pamphlets – “Hand
in Hand, Let’s Walk Guided by Intelligence” and “Goodbye Ideology” – showed
him to be an opposition figure and he was dubbed an “enemy of the regime.”
